& Industry Tours...
Telkwa where quality of life is not

Forestry, mining, tourism and agriculture are key economic activities

Forestry
The Forest industry is the largest employer in the region,
supplying many jobs at mills, through logging and trucking contractors
and in tree nurseries. There are two local nurseries nearby Telkwa -
PRT Summit Nursery Ltd. and Woodmere Nursery Ltd. Combined, they form
one of the largest growers of reforestation seedlings in the province.
The tree nurseries offer free tours by appointment. These tours are
highly educational and participants are given a complimentary seedling
to take home.

Forest Nursery Tours
British Columbia is committed to sustaining the forestry resource.
If you are interested in learning more about British Columbias
reforestation industry, be sure to take a complimentary tour through
either the Woodmere or PRT Summit Nurseries located near Telkwa. A
knowledgeable employee will provide information on each component
of the nurseries operations from sowing, transplanting, packaging
and lifting to irrigation methods. Test yourself to see if you can
determine the tree types, some include, pine, spruce, fir, alder,
hemlock and larch. Watch large-scale production tree nurseries in
action and take home a complimentary seedling. Tours are 40 minutes
to 1 hour in length.
Agriculture
Agriculture is a mainstay of Telkwas economy: dairy farming,
cattle ranching, grain and vegetable growing are important activities
in this area. Northern Root and Narnia Farms grow produce for sale
locally. Narnia Farms produce a variety of homemade jams, jellies,
honey and other items for sale. Both farms offer complimentary tours
of their operations.

Narnia Farms
Come tour Narnia Farms and sample our tasty products. Narnia Farms
is a certified organic herb farm with plantings of common herbs
for our own harvesting plus herb display gardens. There is a dye
garden, culinary herb garden and a tea garden that displays medicinal
tea herbs and their uses. Some of our products include; jams, jellies,
teas, honey, candles, soaps, mustards, and seasonings. Please book
ahead for group tours so we can prepare baking and teas for your
visit. We invite you to enjoy a relaxing time amid our aromatic
plants, sample our wares, and absorb the breathtaking scenic view
of Hudson Bay Mountain.
Directions to Narnia Farms: Turn off Highway
16 onto the Old Babine Lake Rd just outside of Smithers, drive over
a small bridge, then turn left onto Snake Road. Continue on Snake
Road until it meets the Telkwa High Road. Turn left and drive for
3 kilometers until you see the sign on the left for Narnia Farms.
Mining
British Columbia is recognized as a world leader in the mining industry
with revenues exceeding $4 billion a year. Most of the major mines
in British Columbia are situated in the northern half of the province.
The Telkwa area is known for its rich coal reserves and coalbed
methane opportunities. The area is also an important producer and
exporter of copper, silver, molybdenum, and gold.

Eskay Creek is the 5th largest silver producer in the world.
Tourism
Telkwas spectacular natural setting, nestled
on the banks of the Bulkley and Telkwa Rivers, surrounded by white
capped mountains provides for a wide range of recreational
opportunities. This translates into a bright future for tourism
in the area. Excellent opportunities exist for Telkwa for growth
especially in the adventure tourism industry.
