Art
& Writing Classes
Brenda Mallory
Whether your interest lies in learning to express yourself through watercolours
or to explore that hidden talent for writing, you will enjoy classes
by Brenda Mallory. Brendas knowledge combined with her ability
to look at the lighter side of life will keep you coming back for more.
Watercolours starts with the wet-on-wet technique, a loose,
free approach to painting that starts your creative juices flowing.
Wet the paper, apply paint and see what develops as the colours mingle
and flow. As your painting dries, Brenda teaches you how, and when to
add colour and texture to create your own piece of unique artwork. As
the classes progress, the techniques become more involved, and the individual
begins to find their own style.
In writing classes, Brenda inspires her students to use
their imagination. Brenda may start with a table and two chairs, a carelessly
tossed fur coat, a set of keys or even an old picture. She directs you
on how to develop characters and situations that might occur, on how
to bring a small detail into your story that could end up having a major
impact. The classes also cover the avenues open to market your writing,
be it short stories, poetry or newspaper columns.
Old Wives Tales
If you love crafts, creativity and fun, these classes are for you. They
cover all age groups from 5 years old and up.
In soapmaking, children work in a safe hands-on environment
and create several soaps to take home, a favourite being soap-on-a-rope.
The adult classes cover a basic white soap with lots of information
about botanicals, essential oils, colour, fats, and even lye. Tole painting
and One Stroke Decorative painting offer the opportunity to create beautiful
folk art or classic designs on any surface. Tree weaving and wheat weaving
will bring the outdoors in as you relax and create unique designs from
natures bounty. Drawing, papermaking, memory jars, Christmas ornaments,
quilling, and even a U-Pick-It class covers almost anything you can
imagine.
Jerrys
Rangers
BC Parks started Jerrys Rangers in 1984 as an activity-based
program for children. Our goal is to help children gain a greater knowledge
of the natural and cultural environment while learning about the provincial
park system. We hope the result is that the children have a good time
and gain skill and knowledge about how to care and use our parks so
they can be enjoyed for generations to come.
Junior
Ranger Program
The Junior Ranger Program is a structured youth program,
which promotes traditional cultures and lifestyles, and is run by local
adults and parents. Although this is not a military program, the Canadian
Forces provide instruction, uniforms and equipment. The program focuses
on skills ranging from weapons safety, sports, survival, citizenship
to healthy living, and includes many others.
Le-Potpourri
Coffeehouse
With a steaming cup of mocha java in one hand, a home baked
goodie in the other you hear the echo of your footsteps on the solid
wood floor of this restored historical church. Perhaps you are treated
to the mellow strains of a guitar, and a melody sung in clear voice,
with acoustics to complement. Laughter and good times herald the start
of an evening at Le-Potpourri Coffeehouse. These evenings of inspiration
and creativity are held in Telkwa at Normas Ark on Hankin Avenue.
Local talent abounds, and an open mike session encourages new artists
to share their performances with an appreciative audience. The building
is impossible to miss, painted in a magical theme of medieval dragons.
Telkwa
Summer Recreation Program
The Telkwa Summer Recreation Program begins in early July
and runs daily, Monday to Friday from 1-4 p.m. until the middle of August.
The program is designed for kids to have fun in the outdoors while hiking,
boating, swimming, horseback riding, or playing group games and making
crafts alongside their peers. This summers programs highlights
were an exciting river rafting trip, a journey on horseback in the picturesque
Driftwood Canyon, an exhilarating game of paintball, an afternoon hockey
camp with semi-pro players instructing, and so much more. If your kids
are between 5 and 12 years of age, and would like something fun to do
while Mom and Dad are sightseeing, we welcome you to participate in
the summer fun this program provides.
Telkwa
Reading Center
The Telkwa Reading Center is a full service library housing a good collection
of childrens books and bestsellers. The charming wood building
with its covered porch is situated next to the Bulkely River. What could
be more relaxing and enjoyable than selecting a book, and reading it,
seated on one of the outdoor benches in a beautiful park like setting?
Internet access is available to keep you in touch with friends
back home. The Summer Reading Program for children from 6-12 years of
age runs on a drop-in basis, and the activities, games and crafts are
designed to promote summer reading. Open Wednesday and Thursday afternoons
and evenings, and on Saturday afternoons, we welcome you to visit, and
share an adventure or two.

a venue to keep lively with group activities. Toddler Gym, Volleyball
for Kids, Teen Fooze Ball and Ping Pong, Childrens Floor Hockey

Wrestling
An experienced instructor heads our local Olympic Style Wrestling
classes. Classes run throughout the school year on Wednesday evenings.
The classes run in two groups from kindergarten to grade 3 and grades
4 to 6. Along with learning the actual wrestling techniques, the children
learn the benefits of participating in structured sports activities.
Yoga
Inspire your mind and refresh your body with Hatha Yoga classes, instructed
by Phillipa Beck. There are introductory classes for beginners and ongoing
classes for those with more experience. Yoga is a centuries old practice
that combines Asanas (a series of poses) and breathing techniques to
promote awareness, flexibility, strength, relaxation and peace.
