Hiking

Trek across valleys and mountain ranges for a multi-day excursion or enjoy a couple hours of easy walking on Telkwa’s scenic trail system that links to Tyhee Lake’s trails. There is no end to the alpine lakes and meadows to explore. Hiking is fun for all ages and a great way to see wildlife and pristine wilderness areas. Bald eagles, osprey, moose, bear, deer, furry marmots, and songbirds are just some of the animals you may see. Guided tours are available and trips can be customized to suit your vacation needs and abilities. Click on businesses and adventure tours for more information.

If you want to do some hiking on your own, be sure to pick up the local trails book which provides directions and maps of the hikes. Friendly staff in the outdoor shops will gladly assist with directions, advice and supplies as well.

Each Sunday, during the summer months, the Bulkley Valley Backpackers lead a day hike. If you’re interested in joining the backpacking group for a day hike check their schedule under the Events Calendar.

Here is a small sampling of some hiking and trekking routes in the Telkwa area.

Telkwa Trail System/Tyee Lake Trails

Linked to Tyee Lake Provincial Park trails, this trail system offers over 10 km of light walking. The Telkwa Trail system has interpretive signs at various locations that detail the flora, fauna, and history of the area and there are stairs in some of the steeper area, for your walking pleasure.

McDowell Lake Trails
On and around Tyhee Mountain, just east of the village are the Tyhee Mountain hiking trails. Over 30 kilometers of nicely rolling trails through some of the most beautiful countryside there is to offer, brings you to the tranquil McDowell Lake. Take a pleasant walk around quiet, peaceful McDowell Lake.

The Bluff Lookout

Drive, bike or walk to the Bluff at the end of Bluff Road for a panoramic view overlooking Tyee Lake and the surrounding mountain ranges.

Simply breathtaking!

Webster Lake Trail

In the Telkwa Mountain Range, visit the deep blue waters of Webster Lake. The short, steep trail is very spectacular but can be strenuous with a creek crossing and some tricky footing. Mountain goats are frequently seen across the basin, just below the edge of Hankin Plateau.

Hunters Basin Trail

In the Telkwa Mountain Range, the high country surrounding Hunters Basin is ideal for hiking with amazing views of the Howson and Babine Ranges as well as Hudson Bay. There are many valleys that radiate out from the plateau if you desire to camp overnight near a water source. If you want to explore for more than just a day, over the west ridge is a distinctive formation known as the Camel Humps; hiking in this direction will bring you to Glacis Creek Trail that leads to Mooseskin Johnny Lake.

Hankin Plateau Trail

On top of the world feeling – you can see for miles from this high plateau in the Telkwa Mountain Range. Catch the morning and evening sun as it slips behinds the mountains and at night see the twinkling lights of Smithers. This plateau over looks a steep, narrow valley dotted with deep green glacial lakes.
