NEW MUNICIPAL HALL
VILLAGE OF TELKWA NEW MUNICIPAL HALL AT 1415 HANKIN AVENUE
This package contains the information about the new municipal hall and the Alternate Approval process.
- The need for a new municipal building has been under consideration for over 9 years
- The current Council struck a Building Committee that consisted of council, staff and members of the public in 2010 The building committee investigated:
o Option to renovate the existing building on Riverside;
o Building new on various town owned land and;
o Purchasing and renovating an existing building (the old Meat Coop / Milk Plant
- The original time line was scheduled for late 2011 early 2012 which would have given Council enough time for more extensive public consultation;
- Due to the fact that the old Riverside building was found to be unfit for occupation due to health and safety issues Council had to take immediate action towards the next steps for the administration building;
- Council was leaning towards the purchase of the old Meat Coop / Milk Plant building and the immediacy of the situation re-enforced that it was the best option.
- In addition to providing a safe environment for our staff:
o it also accomplishes the secondary goal of cleaning up the Hankin Corner;
o Provides future expansion at minimal cost
o Ability for potential rental revenue
o Public meeting space
o Addresses the wishes and needs of the Telkwa residence as expressed during the public consultation process for our Official Community Plan (OCP) and Integrated Community Sustainably Plan (ICSP)
