Telkwa NOMINATED!  International Awards for Liveable Communities

Village of Telkwa named a finalist in the United Nations Liveable Communities Awards

The International Awards for Liveable Communities (LivCom) recognize international best practices for management of the local environment

The judging panel of the 2012 United Nations Liveable Communities Awards competition has selected the Village of Telkwa as a finalist in the 2012 LivCom Awards to be held November 22nd to 26th in Al Ain City, United Arab Emirates.

The nomination came as a result of Telkwa’s Community Sustainability and Resiliency Plan, which incorporated the village’s recently completed Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP), Official Community Plan (OCP), Zoning Bylaw and Affordable Housing Needs Assessment and Action Plan. The plan has been selected as a leading edge sustainability project that has achieved global standards for management of the local environment.

“It is very exciting that our small community can compete on a world level,” said Village of Telkwa Mayor Carman Graf. “Telkwa is a great place to live and now the world is going to know about it.”

The successful completion and integration of all four municipal policy documents proves that policy implementation in municipalities across the nation can be completed in a compact, efficient and logical manner. By combining these four policy documents through grass-roots community engagement, the associated goals and objectives of each document become far more achievable.

“Being selected as a finalist is a tribute to the community. We are very proud to be recognized on an international level,” said Kim Martinsen, Chief Administrative Officer, Village of Telkwa.

The Community Sustainability and Resiliency Plan is a model of public consultation and policy development that can be used in rural communities across Canada, and represents the future of integrated municipal policy development and planning. This approach can be used to think beyond community plan reviews and bylaw changes to integrate and allow other policy initiatives that combine social, economic and environmental components.

Launched in 1997, The LivCom Awards are endorsed by the United Nations Environment Programme, (UNEP). It is the world’s only awards competition focusing on international best practice regarding the management of the local environment. The objective of LivCom is to develop and share international best practice, with the further objective of improving the quality of life of individual citizens through the creation of liveable communities. Whistler, Ucluelet and Gibsons B.C. are previous LivCom award winners.
