BIOGRAPHIES

Mayor Carman Graf

Mayor Graf is serving his second term as Mayor of Telkwa.

He was born and raised in Nova Scotia and moved to the Bulkley Valley in 1962. He and his childhood sweetheart, Joan, have been happily married for 56 years. They have four children, twelve grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

After over 40 years of owning and operating their family business in Smithers, the couple officially retired in 2004.

Mayor Graf’s long and distinguished political career began in 1971 when he was elected to Smithers Town Council where he served for the next 21 years, including two terms as Mayor. During those years, his expertise and leadership skills were utilized in the supervision of many important projects including the restoration of Main Street, an upgraded municipal water supply, and a major town sewer project.

In addition to his public service, Mayor Graf has devoted his time and experience to many other organizations including:

• President of the Smithers Flying Club
• President of the Smithers and District Chamber of Commerce
• President of Smithers Minor Hockey
• Board of the Bulkley Valley and District Hospital
• Director of the North Central Municipal Association
• Director of the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako
• Director of the North West Regional Hospital Board
• Corporal in the Rocky Mountain Rangers Army Reserve where he achieved the designation of Certified Rifle Marksman

Mayor Graf’s hobbies include hunting and fishing with his grandchildren, golfing, square dancing, carpet bowling and reading. He has a keen interest in airplanes, especially war planes, and enjoys using the flight simulator on his computer. Even with his busy schedule, Mayor Graf still takes time to volunteer for “Meals on Wheels” and spending time with area seniors who cannot get around on their own.
